Smuggler, Rebel, Hero

Han Solo (portrayed by Harrison Ford) is an important character seen in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977). Known as a professional smuggler, he is sought out by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness), who are attempting to vacate the planet of Tatooine so that they can reach Alderaan and deliver the plans to the Death Star, a devastating superweapon, to the Rebel Alliance. After being swayed by the promise of reward, he gives them permission to board the Millennium Falcon and evades the pursuit of the Empire’s stormtroopers. He is reluctant to provide further assistance without monetary incentive, but it soon becomes apparent that there is more to him than meets the eye, his heroic side compelling him to help.

Later entries in the original trilogy continue to emphasise Solo’s character development, following his exploits on behalf of the Rebels. By the conclusion of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi (1983), he is regarded as a hero of the Galactic Civil War. Unfortunately, events that transpire beyond this point cause him to regress into a smuggler once again, his evolution undone by his son’s fall to the dark side.

Taking a look at Solo’s early history, a prequel film starring Alden Ehrenreich was released in 2018. Audiences learn that the future Rebel hero grew up on Corellia, where he and his childhood friend Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) joined a gang. Following a successful escape attempt, Solo joins the Imperial Navy and serves for three years before deserting to join another group of criminals. This time period sees the character develop many of his recognisable traits and acquire his synonymous starship.
