Kill Rock ’N Roll

Formed in the early ’90s, System Of A Down (otherwise known as SOAD or System) is a heavy metal band from California. Prior to the establishment of SOAD, Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian created a separate band called Soil, which was managed by Shavo Odadjian. Unfortunately, they disbanded after one live show and one recording session, with bassist Dave Hakopyan and drummer Domingo ‘Dingo’ Laranio choosing to part ways.

In 1994, the remaining trio started SOAD, naming the group after a poem written by Malakian. The original line-up comprised Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards, and rhythm guitar), Malakian (lead/rhythm guitar and co-lead vocals), Odadjian (bass and backing vocals), and Andy Khachaturian (drums); however, Khachaturian — who sustained an injury while taking part in Jeet Kune Do — was replaced by John Dolmayan (drums and percussion) in 1997. Although Odadjian had previously acted as the manager for Soil, he relinquished this position to David ‘Beno’ Benveniste, the founder of Velvet Hammer Music And Management Group.

2006 saw the band take an indefinite break, but they specified that this was not a permanent split. As promised, they reunited in 2010, appearing in a series of European festivals. Their official reunion tour commenced during the following year, the conclusion hosted in Santiago, Chile.

Throughout SOAD’s music career, they have released several albums: System Of A Down (1998), Toxicity (2001), Steal This Album! (2002), Mezmerize (2005), and Hypnotize (2005). Three of these took the number-one spot on the US Billboard 200 upon their separate releases.
