Alice

I expected something a little more intelligent and interesting from Alice: Madness Returns. It's just a bog standard platform game and not a good one.

I really enjoyed Alice: Madness Returns the first time I played it on PC. I love how it remains disturbing and elegant and funny all the time. Alice is beautiful, frail and wry, it's impossible not to be captivated by her. The atmosphere is rapturing. As a platform I found it pretty good, but sometimes certain dynamics are repetitive. All in all, it's a very good game.

When I bought Alice: Madness Returns, I did not expect it to be such a good game. I have adored this game since I got it. The atmosphere is very special and maybe not everybody appreciates. The game is not very replayable, which is one of the defects, but it's the only one for me.

Much better than the Tim Burton's movie

This game was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. That is no secret. Each of the worlds has a unique visual theme. There are forest, factory, dollhouse, card-castle, underwater and many other worlds, just to name a few. The music and the visuals have the right level of creepiness. They music gives you an eerie and lonely feeling. The story is interesting and original. It makes me proud to say that this is based on the Alice in Wonderland books. The weapons are interesting and unique although not quite balanced because when I played on easy I found that my fully upgraded teapot cannon could kill most normal enemies with only a few shots whereas other fully upgraded weapons would take longer. Therefore most of the time I ended up using just the pepper grinder weapon (aka the machine-gun) and the teapot cannon (aka the grenade launcher) and the game became more of a 3rd person shooter for me. The targeting system is not very good. It was difficult to change targets. It felt kind of wobbly and imprecise so fighting at close range wasn't very fun. The game got a bit boring and repetitive after some time. Maybe that's because I tried to find all the collectibles. There are over a hundred of them to be found! You can collect memories, bottles and teeth and find hidden pig snouts around the world. The things is, most of them are one way only so you often have to go back to were the main path got split after finding the collectible. This is honestly boring. I want to move forward not backtrack. It also sometimes sends you on missions to rescue some creatures or find some blocks. Those also use the same strategy, often requiring you to slay some enemies in the process. It felt like these quests were stalling the main story. It wasn't always clear where you had to go. In the earlier levels there would be hidden "messages" and arrows showing were to go but this idea wasn't used much later on. Some environments looked too cluttered or dark. The ending wasn't quite satisfying either. It seems like I'm only talking about the bad stuff but the game isn't bad. I did get the platinum trophy for it after all. I guess it's the uniqueness of the world and story that made me finish it. The idea behind the game was very good, the execution, not so much. Yet I still recommend it to people who like: platforming + hack-and-slash + unique things that others might label as creepy or weird. You do get the code to download the first game but you need a UK PSN account and that game is pretty old so don't expect much from it. Still, a nice bonus for the fans.

A long and mad experience

5

At the beginning of Alice: Madness Returns, I have to say that this game is lacking a great hole that currently almost every game has. Game play duration... Alice: Madness Returns is really long; long enough for a player to soak up all the fun and joy a game should offer. Not a 5 or 6 hours one... Meanwhile, the story of the game really keeps the attention on the game. After each chapter, you will be curious as to what will happen next, or what will be the piece for the puzzle. Gameplay is mainly hack and slash combined with platforming, but different enemy types make the experience delightful because you may need to use two different weapons to kill an enemey. Also, due to sensitive controls, platforming is enjoyable... Furthermore, gameplay includes some other type of small games like 2D platforming... Puzzles are well prepared but from my point of view, they are easy. Alice: Madness Returns is a long, well designed, and mad experience to play...

The game has a crazy and unhealthy atmosphere that made the whole game worth it. It takes you deep into the human psyche.

Alice: Madness Returns is a title for those who love "American McGee's Alice". A classic platform game with environmental puzzles in theme with the series, and at times one is overcome by the gorgeous scenery. Many reviews say that it's nice to play. Note the contrast of the real world London, all gray and gloomy, with the dream of Wonderland, full of colour even if grotesque for certain situations. Highly recommended if you want a surreal and fun gaming trip.

I felt a little disappointed by Alice: madness returns but I still loved it. A must buy if you were a fan of the original Alice game.
