The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Open sandbox Roleplaying game. It is a non-linear and you have to talk to people to get quests, there is no indication whether or not a game character is a quest giver or not. Nor is every place shown to you on your map, you have to discover them first. It is time consuming and demands that the player (you) work for the story and progress. If you only like linear games that takes you on a rollercoaster, then this is not the game for you. If you like to explorer, discover, try different play styles, then look no futher. This game containts hours of traveling, discovering new locations, battling in the open world and in dungeons (and like), you can be a Mage of different schools, blasting with the elements or mental spells. How about an Archer with deadly precision or a stealthy Thief. A stout Warrior with specialized combat in either a powerful two handed or a fast one handed weapon, the latter with a shield or an extra weapon. You can buy and furnish serveral homes during your quest, even marry certain characters in the game. Make your own gear, discover it in old tombs or loot it off your slain foes. Train yourself and hunt Dragons! Game of the Year for Roleplaying fans

Really nice game

I had no doubts that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would be a really good game, and when I got it and played the first missions I was amazed. A gargantuan world to explore, tons of quests to do, lots of weapons and armour to discover and heaps of enemies all over the place. Several different character builds with races, skills and perks makes for a tailored gameplay suitable for anyone.

Very In depth game

The amount of detail which has been put into this game is phenomenal and makes for a very enjoyable gaming experience. You could spend hours on end playing this with all of its side quests and bonus missions. This game makes each and every quest seem like your life depends on completing it. The combat is good, not perfect but good, and the environments are stunning. The new perk system also works very well and I just can't wait to upgrade each time. Overall this makes for a very good game, definitely worth a buy!

I love it in spite of its faults

The bad: dated graphics, bad user interface that frequently forces you to pause the game and navigate needlessly long lists, bugs and frequent crashes. The good: mostly everything else. This is a great game in the wake of Morrowind and Oblivion. Explore a vast world filled with places to go, people to meet and quests to undertake, and have a lot of fun in the process. Freedom to explore is the key characteristic of Elder Scrolls titles, and Skyrim is true to its roots. It drops one of the worst characteristics of Oblivion, mob auto-leveling, and also the overly complex skill/stat system, in favor of a more streamlined approach based on a perk system. You can no longer excel in *everything*, and this is also a good thing in my book. Sure, you can still be a fighter and also a mage if you like, but you'll have to compromise somewhere: do you invest in mana, stamina or a balance between the two? Do you spend your precious perk points on combat skills or magic talents? In the end, it makes perfect sense to me. I mentioned the dated graphics, but this is from a technical standpoint only: visually the game is impressive, with great landscapes and mysterious dungeons. There are some breathtaking moments when you gaze on exceedingly beautiful scenery for a few seconds before moving on. Combat is mostly satisfactory. Without the auto-levelling NPCs you get the satisfaction of moving up the ladder: if a wolf can threaten you at the beginning, after a few levels it's just a minor nuisance. Taking on undead warlords or megalomaniac necromancers is different though, and my only gripe is that it's not always easy to tell which quests are within your reach and one-shot deaths are not at all uncommon (at least on "difficult" level). Your character is a bit anonymous, lacking the deep characterization of other titles, but that's implicit in the freedom the game world gives you. Until a real AI is created, NPCs will have to rely on scripted dialogs, which cannot possibly cover all possible situations. All in all, this game comes highly recommended. Well, maybe it will be even better in a patch or two.

Hack and slash your way to happiness. This epic title is simply a must have. An epic journey that sucks you right in and won't let go. The numerous locations (300+), inexpressible feeling of freedom, factions, vast number of quests and side quests, dragons, pure skill based character with no restrictions is only a tip of the iceberg this epic awesomeness has to offer. Game of the year? No! Game of the decade! The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is more than just a game. You don't play Skyrim, you live it!

RPG of the decade

Gorgeus and incredibly large game, Skyrim is one of the contenders for the Game of the year award. The gameplay is incredibly flexible and allows you to play the game the way you want to and with it's 100-hour long campaign it's an unforgettable experience. If you only want one RPG this year, it should be Skyrim.

Outstanding

This is indeed an epic piece of art. As for me, I already got my money's worth just from exploring this truly stunning landscape that is Skyrim. I would give this 5 stars if it were just a tad more innovative (it is quite similar to Oblivion gameplay-wise).

The new Elder Scrolls takes the best parts from the previous games and mixes it with the "casualness" that is found lately in almost all the games. The result is a very entertaining game, with few negative points. Gameplay (9/10): Skyrim presents itself as an action-RPG game, in which you represent the role of the Dragonborn (new title for the always-needed-hero). You will have to complete the typical quest to save the world, but placed in the superb lore of Tamriel, which is something that Bethesda has taken great care of. There are also loads of side-quests, giving the player more than 300 hours of fun. The hero levels up when the skills are used, not by slaying monsters. This method has proven to be quite sucesfull, plus giving a closer sensation of what is really to improve your skill in something you do. Besides the main skills, there are a few mini-games that compliment the game, like mining, chopping wood, fishing, or harvesting. Graphics (8/10): Skyrim looks good, even though it uses Directx9. It has been optimized to run even in the 360 and the PS3, so the textures could have been better, for instance. Luckily for us, the PC users can tweak the .ini files to get the best result. Sound (8/10): Skyrim's OST is awesome, it fits perfectly in each situation (The climax comes when fighting the dragons) or place you are visiting. The rest of the sounds are just ok. Conclusion: First I should say I'm a bit partial, because I'm in love with the saga when I first discovered Morrowind back in 2002, and with Oblivion after that. But leaving this aside, the game is a good game. You can feel the good manners and the experience from Bethesda, so if you enjoyed the Fallout series, this game won't disappoint you. Even if you don't like RPG games at all, the FPS-style of Skyrim might like you enough to give it a try.
