Doom 3: BFG Edition is the definitive collection of the incredible and innovative Doom series, developed by id Software. The series is stylised as a first person science fiction horror game, which is designed to make you feel as terrified as possible. This edition of the critically and commercially successful game comes jam packed with a whole host of extras alongside the enhanced version of Doom 3 itself, which was originally released in 2004 for PC and 2005 for Xbox.
Doom 3 is set in the year 2145 on the planet Mars, where scientific research is being conducted in a military facility on teleportation, biology, and advanced weapons design. However, the research goes awry and the teleportation experiments somehow open up a gateway to Hell, inadvertently resulting in an invasion by demons. You take on the role of a space marine, whose sole mission is to eradicate the plague of demons, and ultimately stop them from attacking Earth. The BFG Edition's extras include the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack, seven additional levels titled the Lost Mission, as well as revamped versions of Doom 3's predecessors Doom and Doom 2. The Lost Mission levels pick up from a certain point in the storyline in the main game, and have you play a different character in a different part of the base.
This is the first time any game of the series is available on any current gen console other than PC, now allowing all three Doom games to be released on PS3 and Xbox 360. And the new range of features doesn't stop there! This edition accommodates for the PS3 and Xbox 360 releases, incorporating PlayStation Trophies and Xbox 360 achievements reward systems. The games also have stereoscopic 3D support, 5.1 surround sound, enhanced visuals, improved rendering and lighting, and new check point systems. The original Doom games have also been given a graphical overhaul, further enhancing the quality of the pioneering first person horror shooter.
The gameplay of this classic horror shooter has been designed to remain the same, except for the immense graphical overhaul to fully immerse you within the game on current generation consoles. One aspect has been redesigned, however, in order to make the game easier on both newcomers and veterans; your character now comes with an armour mounted flashlight, which is a drastic change from the original. In the original Doom 3, your character was armed with either a flashlight or a weapon, meaning you had to keep switching from one to the other and constantly make the choice as to whether you'd prefer to be armed, or to see what lies ahead of you.
This story-driven horror shooter will shake you to the core with its spine-tingling and terrifying atmosphere and monsters, never letting you relax as you know you are never truly safe. Doom 3 is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat every time you play, and there's no guarantee you'll be successful in your mission. Be afraid. (Cat Emerson)
