What’s Game of Thrones About?

Best known as a fantasy television series on HBO, Game of Thrones (which ran for eight seasons) predominantly revolves around the Iron Throne, the seat of power in Westeros. There are many who desire to sit upon it, but equally, others want to be free of its influence. Engaged in the conflict to decide the fate of the Seven Kingdoms are the nine Great Houses: Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Tully, Greyjoy, Arryn, Tyrell, Martell, and Targaryen.

These noble bloodlines have spawned both hero and villain, including the likes of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark (Sean Bean), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson), Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Though the people of the south focus their attention on political manoeuvring, the fate of Westeros is to be decided by more than the ambitions of man. The far north of Westeros, beyond the Wall, hides a greater threat, a race of ice-blooded creatures that possess the ability to raise an army of undead wights. Known as the White Walkers, these apathetic creatures want nothing except to destroy all life, and the intervention of the Night’s Watch — admirable as it is — will not be enough to hold the line.

Who Wrote Game of Thrones?

The Game of Thrones books were written by author George R.R. Martin, but it was only the first book that was referred to as such, the series in its entirety being known as A Song of Ice and Fire. In total, the story was planned to have seven entries: A Game of Thrones (1996), A Clash of Kings (1999), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast for Crows (2005), A Dance with Dragons (2011), The Winds of Winter, and A Dream of Spring.

In addition to writing A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin has also penned several stories that centre on different characters and take place in time periods before the events of the War of the Five Kings. Many of these assume the form of novellas, such as the Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series that comprises The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010).

A larger volume, Fire & Blood (2018), incorporated elements of a further three novellas: The Princess and the Queen (2013), The Rogue Prince (2014), and The Sons of the Dragon (2017). Taking place hundreds of years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, these stories recount some of the history of the Targaryens, whose dynasty once ruled the Seven Kingdoms. A significant portion of this book was adapted for House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel series that, like its predecessor, was aired on HBO.
