It's a year of change at Waterloo Road as the school finds itself with a new Head Teacher and on the cusp of even greater change.
Meanwhile the first term finds Head Teacher Karen Fisher still trying to stay in control, while finding herself enamoured of the new Site Manager Rob Scotcher. An abandoned baby, new teaching staff, gender issues, bullying, cancer, backstabbing and more brings in a Director of Education with an ulterior motive as he gathers information to threaten the school with closure.
But the spring term brings a new Head Teacher, Michael Byrne, and new staff including married couple Jeremy 'Jezz' Diamond, and his wife Sian, as well as an old companion of Michael's, the conceivably unbalanced Linda Radleigh.
New students include Phoenix and Harly Taylor, as well as twins Shona and Rhona Mansfield, Tariq and his sister Trudi, while stepping up as best mates are the unlikely pairing of Emily James and Jodi 'Scout' Allen.
As the tension builds, Michael is taken out by a hit and run driver, and the summer term finds him recuperating while the school faces a new challenge in the form of gang culture. On the home front, Grantly loses his wife to Alzheimer's; Janeece meets the man of her dreams in an all-too whirlwind romance; and even young Scout finds herself caught up in a love affair that may be less than it seems.
Prom night is coming, Kyle is on the loose with a crossbow, the school may be about to close, what will the future hold? Whatever happens, Waterloo Road will live on - although its future may lie further afield.
