Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is your standard over-stressed and over-worked suburbanite who while on vacation from work decides he’d rather relax in his own home than go on an energy absorbing holiday with his wife and son. All he wants to do is sleep late, sun bathe and drink beer, but with his meddlesome neighbour Art (Rick Ducommun) around, this isn’t easy.
While relaxing on the porch one night, Art makes an outrageous assumption about the Klopeks, the strange new neighbours who have just moved into the cul-de-sac. Ray dismisses the idea instantly and forgets about the whole conversation. But when he wakes up in the night to discover the Klopeks digging holes in their back yard in the middle of a rainstorm, he slowly starts to become convinced that his neighbours are in fact... murderers.
Now with a reason to investigate, Ray, Art and their eccentric ex-military neighbour Rumsfield (Bruce Dern) start to prod at their neighbours in hope that they will snap. But when a local retiree goes missing, the race to discover the truth begins, with hilarious and shocking consequences.
