Academy Award winner George Clooney stars in the title role of this suspense thriller, filmed on location in Italy.
A lone hitman is forced into hiding after his last job went awry. Jack (George Clooney) is on his own, an American in Italy and vows that his next job will be his last. That isn’t going to be an easy job for Jack; he’s used to working hard and getting the job done.
While hiding out he befriends a local priest, Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli), something he had never done before and also engages in a relationship with a local woman, Clara (Violante Placido). While Jack is taking some time off he is also on the verge of a new job; building a weapon for a mysterious woman named Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). Jack has broken rules, and making friends while on the job is about to put him in more danger than ever before.

Not a typical American film
The film may not be what many will expect from a film about an assissin hiding out in Italy, waiting for his last job after his previous job in Sweden didn't go to plan. This is not the expected 90 minutes of gun fights, car chases and explosions but a well crafted drama about love. I was mesmerised from begining to end and the cinematography is beautiful. I saw this at the cinema and will be buying the Blu-ray.

a MUST see movie
George Clooney plays a key part in a must see movie! I compare his figure to one played within the bourne films. Definitely a must see, four star, action packed movie.

The American
This is one of those films that you will either enjoy or be disappointed. This is more of an adult thriller rather than an action movie. It seems to be very slow at times but still gripping with suspense, actions speaking louder than words. The scenery is stunning, a great ad for visiting Italy.

Really enjoyed this film, its about a lonely ,sullen assasin (George Clooney) and the toll the years of killing have taken on him. I thought the film was well scripted and shot well. A great thriller

Wow! Great film!
As usual in a George Clooney film there's suave and sophistication from this silver fox! George Clooney plays a steely and introspective assassin hiding out in Italy, awaiting orders and contemplating his past deeds. Those expecting rollicking thrills may be disappointed but this succeeds as a finely acted slow-burning espionage film. The American is everything Americans are supposedly not. Instead of brash and loud, this film is quiet and subdued. For all of its precise direction and beautiful imagery, it's a classic genre picture, and a damn good one at that...

The American (2010)
I thoroughly enjoyed this low-key but entertaining thriller, directed by Anton Corbjin (Control). George Clooney is the only major star in the film and he turns in a restrained and understated performance as a world-weary hit man who has barely escaped death in Sweden and moves to rural Italy to let things quieten down. It is clear that he is considering getting out off the "business". He settles into the slow pace of life there and starts a relationship with a local woman. However one of his old connections asks him to help in setting up a "hit" and he agrees. This sets in motion a tense series of events that leads to a dramatic and perhaps inevitable conclusion. Clooney's performance is miles away from his more familiar wisecracking roles, such as Ocean's Eleven. "The American" is more similar to films of his like "Syriana" and "Michael Clayton", both of which were excellent. The supporting cast are excellent, including Thekla Reuten, Violante Placido and Paolo Boncelli.
