Les Diaboliques (The Fiends) is an unsettling and beautifully-paced study of betrayal, mistrust and guilt. In a decaying boarding school, a sadistic headmaster brutalizes his fragile wife and his headstrong mistress. The two women murder him and dump his body in a swimming pool; when the pool is drained, no corpse is found.
An acknowledged influence on Psycho, Henri-Georges Clouzot's horror classic expertly keeps the viewer gripped in a manner that recalls Hitchcock at his very best. Atmospherically shot in black and white, its murky tones hauntingly echo the moral ambiguity of its principals.

Interesting and influential
Les Diaboliques is an incredibly interesting and influential film! The wife of an abusive headmaster and his mistress conspire to kill him. They dump the body in a dirty swimming pool in the grounds of the school, but when the pool is drained the body had disappeared... Thus begins a tense psychological thriller, one that I would highly recommend.
