When Martin Scorsese, one of the world's most skilful and respected directors, reunited with two-time Oscar Winner Robert De Niro in 'GoodFellas', the result was one of the most powerful films of the year.
Based on the true life best seller 'Wiseguy' by Nicolas Pileggi and backed by a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, critics and filmgoers alike declared 'GoodFellas' great. It was named the best film of the '90s by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of film critics, and it earned 6 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Robert De Niro received wide recognition for his performance as veteran criminal Jimmy 'The Gent' Conway. And as the volatile Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Academy Award nominee Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino also turned in electrifying performances. You have to see it to believe it - then watch again. 'GoodFellas' explores the criminal life like no other movie.

Goodfellas
This is a fast paced gangster film and considered to be Martin Scorsese's best work. Goodfellas is based on a true story and follows the life of Henry Hill. The movie begins in the 1950s where we see Henry admiring the gangsters who live in his neighbourhood and their lifestyle. He starts doing jobs for the mob like burning cars and selling cartons of cigarettes out the back of a truck. He eventually meets the calm Jimmy and the very volatile Tommy. They eventually set up the 'Lufthansa Heist' where they steal an estimated 6 million dollars. Jimmy starts to get paranoid that the people invovled in the heist will 'rat' him out to the police. Henry then becomes addicted to cocaine which affects his judgement and he starts to become paranoid. He thinks Jimmy wants to kill him and he is right. Henry eventually gets caught by the police selling drugs and to protect him and is family, he tells the police about Jimmy and the heist. He and his family are then put into the witness protection program. I love this film because it is a raw look into a gangster's daily life. Scorsese said he shot the film like a Caravaggio painting using only one light source. This film finds the humour in dark situations and I see it more as a comedy than a thriller. This is one of my favourite films and i would recommend it to anyone. I could watch this film every week and never get bored. I would give this film 5 stars out of 5. Scorsese is considered one of the best directors to have ever lived and he really shows it in Goodfellas

Goodfellas
An epic that rivals the authenticity of 'The Godfather' and the mindless violence of 'Scarface', Goodfellas possesses all that is great about gangster movies. A killer plot, a perfect soundtrack, superb acting and casting and wonderful directorship. Goodfellas is a Scorsese classic and, in my eyes, his greatest film. Yet another effortless collaboration between Scorsese, De Niro and Pesci leads to one of the greatest gangster films of all time, the greatest if not for 'The Godfather', with satisfaction throughout. The metafictive narrative that is used by Scorsese is a move of genius proportions and completes the film. I've seen 'The Untouchables', i've seen 'A Bronx Tale, i've seen 'Scarface' and i've seen 'Casino' but they are all superfluous in comparison to this mafia masterpiece!

Worthy of 7 stars !
A Scorsese master class ! I love gangster movies, well actually I just love movies and WOW what a movie ! If by some miracle of man you have missed this it's one of the greatest films ever made and made better by the fact you know its a true story. With a brilliant cast they bring to life a film that is extreme on all levels, it's the mob at their worst and if you get bored watching this you need to check yourself in somewhere ! This is a film you will watch over and over again and your pleasure and enjoyment will only ever increase.
