Proof that the cyberpunk genre can still deliver
Ghost in the Shell: SAC is a series based on the movie and manga published in the 90's, and was arguably an example of "post-cyberpunk" science fiction (for those not familiar; cyberpunk focused on how high technology would ruin lives, post cyberpunk was made when it turned out not to be so bad). The second series continues on from the first, with Section 9 being rebuilt (along with the Tachikomas). Improvements can be seen as soon as you start watching; while I don't like the new theme song as much as the first season's, they at least had the sense to make the title sequence using cell-shaded animation as opposed to rather conspicuous CGI of the first season's (what their excuse for it was anyone's guess, given they had no trouble animating the 'koma's and other parts of the show with it). Other than that, it maintains the same level of quality as the first series (to put it simply, if you enjoyed 1st GIG, you'll enjoy this). Without spoiling the plot, it follows a similar pattern to the previous season, switching between "complex" episodes and one shot "Stand alone" episodes (albeit with different names). They're even kind enough to label them, in case you want to skip the filler. As far as DVD extras go, the interviews are vaguely interesting, but the "character profiles" are of questionable accuracy. The English dub's excellent (although English subs and the original Japanese dialogue's available if that's your thing), but a lot of the signs are left untranslated, which can be annoying if they're important to the plot.
