Packard Bell Dot 10.1 Inch SC/Atom Netbook N2600 (1GB RAM 320GB HDD W7S White)

We wanted something cheap, cheerful and portable for our son to play online games, school work etc. This ticks the correct boxes. However, we won't win any prizes for speed etc.

A nice little gadget

I needed something small, light and inexpensive with which to access e-mails and do a bit of browsing while travelling. It had to have a bigger screen than a smartphone - and a decent keyboard. The current Packard Bell "Dot" netbooks are made by Acer and their quality is quite good. This variant has the 3-cell battery and Windows "Starter" (which does all that you are likely to need on a netbook) plus 60-day Norton Internet Security trial and Photoshop "Elements". This one does just what I need and was good value, also it is much prettier than I expected for the price. The processor is well up to the job so the limiting factor is the 1GB RAM - don't expect to run multiple simultaneous applications or lots of demanding web pages without slow running!. This is not a posh laptop it is just a little netbook. Before using one, turn off automatic updates (use the "reminder" option) and gently get it fully updated in stages. Give the battery a few charge / discharge cycles. Turn off any surplus programs, make sure the screen brightness setting is not more than you need and consider increasing the size of the "virtual memory" allocation on disc (get an IT professional to help with that stuff if you are not used to it). It will be faster with a RAM upgrade to 2GB - but that will use more power too so if you need that you will probably also want the version with a 6-cell battery (heavier) - your choice! I get a genuine 4 hours browsing and e-mailing with the 3-cell one running 1GB RAM. The charger/plug is relatively long and slim. It runs cool and and has a removable mains pin assembly. That helps a bit with carriage, also it can be re-fitted in a variety of alignments (i.e you can have the charger at different angles relative to the mains socket). As with many "laptop" computers the cooling air inlet is underneath the netbook - so if you use it on a soft surface, such as, er, your lap, make sure you don't block that! The touch pad is pretty good and has a handy "tap" function which means you don't have to "click" if you don't want to. The "tap" is quite sensitive so I suggest that you turn it off (a setup option) while manipulating any system files! It is worth fitting an optical USB mouse (in which case you can turn off the touch pad altogether if you want to - there is a button for that). I use a Cerulian 3-button "mini moblle blue trace" mouse (Model N96JA) which works well and has a retractable cable. All in all a nice little gadget - judged as a netbook it is probably worth five stars with a 2GB RAM upgrade and a 6-cell battery.
