Terrible remake!!
1Original was a tough act to follow, but nearly 30 years after, the remake of The Thing is seriously bad. Whilst the continuation at the end to the earlier version worked well, the rest of it was dire. Just so little thought or originality into the story. Extremely disappointed.

The Thing is .. it's great!
5I already had the original The Thing on dvd and was looking forward to getting the new one sometime. Then I saw the original / prequel Blu-ray box set at such a good price so I bought it. The film covers the discovery of an alien craft under the ice and later the shape-shifting alien by the Norwegian base in the Antarctic. The monster-alien effects are excellent and believable from the CGI point of view, and actually managed to instill a reasonable sense of horror and menace. The acting is done well, making you believe in each one's terror at their predicament and desperation in trying to stay alive. The Blu-ray certainly does the film justice. Where this film ends is where the original Kurt Russell one begins which makes a satisfying link between the two. The original was always a great Sci-fi film where even the special effects were reasonably good for the time and the story is excellent, even if it is a remake of a 1950's movie. The Blu-ray treatment has made this great film even better in my opinion, and the fact that you can watch the two together one after the other is testament to that. All-in-all, a very enjoyable bargain Blu-ray boxset.

Good boxset at cheap price
4Was surprised to see this so cheap, so I bought it and wasn't disappointed. The Thing by John Carpenter is a sci-fi/horror classic and on it's own is more expensive than this boxset on most sites. The 2011 movie is a prequel to the old one and, although not as original, does have good effects and a decent cast using real Norwegians rather than dumb actors with an awful accent attempt. The new movie was inch perfect in large and small details e.g. Kurt Russell finds a bloody axe in a door, the new director made sure we find out how the axe got there, why and right down to measurement of axe from the floor mirroring scenes from the old movie! Worth a punt at this price.

4The Thing is a classic movie, with a great new prequel that's well worth a watch. Got it for a bargain price as well.

The Thing (1982) / The Thing (2011)
4Although 'The Thing' (it itself a remake of a 50's classic) was poorly received upon it's initial release over the past three decades it has grown in reputation and legend. Kurt Russell plays his role fantastically given scripts have never been John Carpenters strongest skill. The special effects were then breath-taking and downright disgusting - a benchmark in modelling and technology rarely surpassed. No one who claims to love horror should go without missing "The Thing" - and this Blu-ray also has a great set of extra bonus features that really show you the effort that went into making some of the ghastly creations. Which brings me to the 2011 production of "The Thing". This prequel attempts to explain what happened in the mysterious 2nd base in Carpenters film - unfortunately it appears that the near 30 year gap in between these productions has not taught the director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. how to expand upon the source material. The film follows the plot of the original almost exactly - even the interrogation scene is almost identical! I appreciate nods to another film as fan service - this film does attempt to explain certain mysteries of Carpenter's film for example - however it simply doesn't attempt to try anything new enough to truly make it worth while. Sadly Mary Elizabeth Winstead also does not have Russell's charisma and although no-one plays their role poorly I think you would be hard pressed to remember any characters from this film a few days after having seen it. Finally - the special effects need addressing in this 2011 version - as mentioned previously the John Carpenter edition was a benchmark in special effects - breath taking and stunning to behold given it was entirely hand made effects. The 2011 forgoes this style and replaces it with the Hollywood standard CGI which looks shiny, out of place and indeed much less impressive than a film near 30 years it's elder. If you ever want to settle an argument as to why modern CGI is detrimental to film making I believe watching these two films back to back would be ideal for this. In conclusion - a great set as you are getting the John Carpenter classic with all it's bonus features - although the prequel is a let down it is interesting for comparisons in film making techniques.

The Thing (1982) / The Thing (2011)
4There are great special effects in both The Thing films, although the prequel isn't as taught and "edge of the seat" as the '82 version. Perhaps that's down to the fact I'm not 10 anymore... Still, they're a bargain at Zavvi's price, and well worth adding to your collection!
