A gallery of high-living lowlifes will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why - and who'll take the fall for his partner's murder.
An all-star cast (including Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr.) joins Bogart in this crackling mystery masterwork written for the screen (from Dashiell Hammett's novel) and directed by John Huston.
This nominee for 3 Academy Awards - Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Greenstreet) and Screenplay (Huston) - catapulted Bogart to stardom and launched Huston's directorial career. All with a bird and a bang!

The Maltese Falcon - Steelbook Edition
This review is not about the movie, which has been around a while, but about the case and the transfer that this The Maltese Falcon - Steelbook Edition came in. It is simply gorgeous, especially the back, and the image of the movie is clear, sharp and without the smallest trace of scratches, flicker, or any other distraction. The audio is excellent too, considering what was available in 1941. All in all, a fabulous package.

Love it on Blu-ray
I love watching a classic on Blu-ray. If you've grown up on Transformers, Avengers, Batman, Iron Man etc then The Maltese Falcon - Steelbook Edition is a film and an era all but forgotten, but there is a reason why The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre et al are now in a modern steelbook package - they're great films, but don't expect special effects. The Maltese Falcon from 1941 (it was made twice before this adaption) is a crime thriller, which relies on its strength of characters more than its plot. It's a twisted tale of intrigue and deception, and I think it works because Bogart finally gets a big part where he is not just a thug and John Huston gets his first crack at a film director.
