Polished but not shiney
This is a review of the Coppola Restoration rather than the film itself. I had a dvd box-set, the black three disc version and had held off the upgrade dvd. This blu-ray boasting the latest restoration was worth buying for me. That original dvd collection went blurry as soon as the camera pans out to the crowd in that opening wedding sequence. Washed out colours and blurred. No problem on a 32” non-flat screen TV but unwatchable on 50” Plasma. The Restoration version is excellent but not perfect. It still has that slight grainy film look, which I actually find more real, more filmic than a glossy video type production. But it stops me from buying the Restoration box-set. The first film is a great movie.

Wonderful.
The Godfather is a superb, beautifully-made and wonderfully-acted classic, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, written by Coppola and Mario Puzo and starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and James Caan. The film itself is splendid. It's a long watch, but the sheer class of the film pulls you through those three hours and twenty minutes, with the richly thrilling crime saga which stars the Corleone crime family, led by Don Vito Corleone, better known as 'The Godfather' to his business partners, friends and even members of his own family. The Blu-Ray is absolutely fine. It is a good transfer and is really good picture and sound quality, especially for the price that Zavvi offer. The special features are limited but I did not buy this film for the features. Some people care more about features than others, and I am one of those who do not. However, the Blu-ray has a wonderful commentary by the director as well as a couple of other cool little extras. For the current price of just under £6, this is an absolute steal of a purchase. The Godfather Blu-ray is a wonderful product, and is a must-have for anybody who is just starting up their Blu-ray collection as I was prior to buying this, or to anybody who has either not seen the film before or simply wants to have a Blu-ray copy of this legendary film.
