Coppola strikes again
There has been some unflattering critique on Sofia Coppola's latest film, but after watching it myself, I can honestly say it's one of 2010's best films. It focusses on a lonely Hollywood movie star, Johnny Marco, and his relationship with his daughter. The film is surprisingly engaging, even though it's very unclear why: Marco's character is not all that sympathetic, but somehow his bluntness works fantastic when interacting with other characters. Performances are on-par and cinematography is, in true Coppola fashion, astonishing. I feel sorry for those who can't enjoy this film: this is apparently a film for a minority, but if you're part of that minority, you'll absolutely love it.

Disappointing
I must say I am huge fan of Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and with Somewhere receiving a Golden lion at the Venice film festival I was expecting quite a lot from this film. While the video and audio quality on the Blu-ray disc is great, Somewhere is a very slow-paced and dull drama about a hard-living Hollywood star. It has it's moments here and there, but unfortunately falls short in comparison to Sofia's previous projects.
