Rush: Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland
I did wonder how different Time Machine: Live In Cleveland could be to all of the many other live discs that Rush have put out over the years, but this performance in the city that helped make their name is one of my favourite live Blu-rays - and I own a lot of them! As always the musicianship of all 3 band members is impeccable, all of them are clearly enjoying themselves especially Alex and Geddy who are constantly interacting with each other and the audience. And of course we get a new Neil Peart drum solo epic - the only drummer who can hold the audience's attention and make a drum solo so "musical". As well as the expected classics like The Spirit of Radio there are tracks from more recent albums but also included is a fantastic full run-through of Moving Pictures. Also previewed are 2 tracks from the forthcoming "Clockwork Angels" album, which bode very well. The performances are central to Rush live as they have never been big on creating a massive spectacle although the combination of lighting and backing videos does look great and those backing visuals have been well used in the editing of this concert video. The direction, camerawork and editing is faultless and shows you every key moment but without being too rapid fire and distracting. The sound is also crystal clear and sounds amazing through a 5.1 system. The Blu-ray is surprisingly light on extras, but you can forgive it that given that the length of the show itself!
