Based on the novel by Nell Dunn and starring Carol White (up the junction, Cathy come home) in the title role, Poor Cow is the story of a young woman in 1960's London who tries to cope while her husband, a small time thief (tom - john bindon), is in prison. Clutching at any slight chance of happiness, she has a promiscuous relationship with his best friend Dave (played by Terence Stamp) which leads to heart breaking consequences. Poor Cow is a poignant, controversial slice of raw social realism, and in true Ken Loach (Kes, The Wind that Shakes the Barley) style, is an imaginative exploration of the thin line separating fiction and real-life. the film was Loach's first feature film and first attempt to bring the social concerns and uncompromising style of his TV work to the big screen.
