Phenomena
Phenomena may not be Argentos best effort, but is nevertheless a must see for fans of the director, and generally for fans of movies about sleepwalking schoolgirls that can manipulate insects and who run into some trouble which involves a mad serial killer and Donald Pleasence in a wheelchair. Arrows steelbook looks absolutely lovely and is housing a nice little booklet. The special features are okay. The making of is not the best that was ever produced, but it is interesting enough. The quality of the film itself was totally satisfactory for me. Unfortunately some scenes are featured in italian only, even though the actors apparently spoke english on the set. But that does not really spoil the film or Arrows steelbook release which comes highly recommended!

Phenomena Steelbook - WOW!
Part of a six set special steelbook release, the Phenomena steelbook is beautiful! In the picture it looks quite plain, but then i got this through the post, unwrapped it, and ......WOW! WHAT A JOY! I didnt expect it to look this good, so i am VERY happy with this. The movie itself? The plot involves a girl who has an affinity with insects, and a killer on the loose - their paths eventually cross. I really, really like this film, it has a sometimes strange atmosphere to it, and alot of visual ideas going on, typical of Dario Argento. Made around the early 80s, films like this, viewed today, have a freshness and originality lacking in most contemporary horror movies. Certain directors had their glaring trademarks, as did Argento, but there was alot of love, imagination, and vitality put into the horror movies of that era. Phenomena has its downsides - an inappropriate heavy rock score, that crops up on three or four occasions, destroying the atmosphere laid down by Claudio Simonetti's harmonic synths. The english dubbing, and the dialogue, is sometimes a bit heavy handed and could be more subtle in places, but thats usually the case with these movies, so not really unusual. Maybe better to have the audio switched to Italian, with the english subs? The pic quality? This blu ray transfer is the same as Arrow video's previous releases of this, and its fine. I'm no expert on all things blu, but on my screen this looked great, maybe a tad soft in places, but take into account its a 35year old movie. I'm completely happy with the picture, though. Sound? Again, no problem at all, nice to hear this on a surround. Oh, one more thing, Donald Pleasance is in this - always a great actor! If you collect steelbooks, then definitely add this to your collectiom. If you want this movie but dont own it yet, then buy this steelbook version, it's well worth it - and limited to only 2000 copies!
