The tragic loss of their unborn child has devastated Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard), taking a toll on both their marriage and Kate's fragile psyche as she is plagued by nightmares and haunted by demons from her past. Struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt another child. At the local orphanage, both John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman).
Almost as soon as they welcome Esther into their home, however, an alarming series of events begins to unfold, leading Kate to believe that there's something wrong with Esther-this seemingly angelic little girl is not what she appears to be. Concerned for the safety of her family, Kate tries to get John and others to see past Esther's sweet facade. But her warnings go unheeded until it may be too late...for everyone.

Shiny over the top thriller
The movie is really great and will keep you watching without even thinking for a break for your body needs. Can't say more because don't want to spoil anything. Acting however is the strong point of this movie! The Blu-Ray presentation is outstanding. Sound and picture are really just reference material. One of the best qualities I've seen so far.

Orphan (2009)
The excellent Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard play well off parents who decide to expand their existing family by adopting a child. When they meet the charming young Esther (an incredible performance from the young Isabelle Fuhrman) at the orphanage it appears to be a case of mutual love at first sight, but when Esther moves into the family household it's a different story. This superb thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, Unknown) is a dark, fast moving throwback to the heyday of horror maestro William Castle. The story's twists keep you guessing at every turn with flashes of black humour, suspense and gore along the way. This is a real treat for horror fans who like decent characterisation along with their scares and is one of the most memorable psychological thrillers of the last 10 years.
