Well worth the extra expense.
The Ultimate edition is huge amounts more expensive than the standard Blu-ray and DVD releases, but having received my copy (number 1938 of 2000) I can thankfully say that is more than worth it. The hardback art-book is very nice, in terms of both layout - it is split into the sections 'Characters', 'Mechas', and 'Settings', and the designs themselves. This edition is also the only one to contain the two films, and the only edition to have packaging that seems impressive enough to match the series. Not only is it huge in size, but the images themselves are hugely impressive. Its honestly a really beautiful set. In fact I almost feel tempted to just look at the box rather than watch the series (almost). The series itself is incredible. Its not perfect, and episode 4 seems poor in terms of animation quality, but there are plenty of incredible moments to make up for it. Its the overall effect of the series that makes it so impressive; Its an insane mix of bunch of different genres which all ultimately boils down to the indomitable human fighting spirit, and rejecting common sense to make the impossible possible! And when it's in such stunning HD you can't lose. Having said that I do have a complaint - my third disk tray came heavily skewed to one side. Have since made some effort to realign but it seems to have sunk downwards. There are issues with a few seconds of DVD footage having been swapped in but that seems really minor and hasn't bothered me. Hoping I will be able to have Anime Limited replace the tray, if not will attempt to re-glue it myself. I would say that, though its a bit annoying, the tray issue is not enough to merit downgrading my review from 5 stars for such a stunning edition of such an insanely good series (+films etc).
