Inspiration for 'Stranger Things'
When this came out in 1984, you could see the influence of ‘The Fury’ and ‘Scanners’ in it. But now, it’s a clear influence on the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ (young girl with powers, secret government agency). It does hold up well after all this time. Drew Barrymore is amazing, considering what she had to do and how young she was at the time. The supporting cast is interesting for this movie having a lot of established actors. although having G.C.Scott play a character who is meant to be Native American has not aged well. While some of the visual effects may have dated, what has not is the extent of the pyrotechnic work which had to be created before there was CGI. It’s spectacular for the time and underscored to the music of Tangerine Dream. This may not be in the top level of 1980’s science-fiction/horror films, but if you enjoy them, this is worth seeking out, even if it does appear to have been passed-over in recent years.
