Oscar-winning Director Joe Johnston (Jumanji, The Wolfman) brings the popular Marvel Comics hero back to the big screen in this action-packed adventure of good vs. evil.
Steve Rogers (Chris Evans - Fantastic Four) is a highly motivated but drastically out of shape soldier who has been rejected yet again to be drafted out into war. Disappointed with himself and feeling as though he will never accomplish anything, Steve is just about ready to put his dreams behind him and quit, until he is offered to take part in a secret experiment led by Dr. Erksine (Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones). The experiment is called Project Rebirth, the aim is to take a weak and sickly body and enhance it into a superhuman body with maximum human potential. In order to prove his extraordinary courage to Dr. Erksine, Rogers steps up to the offer and comes out completely reformed. He is now equipped with incredible strength, endurance and agility. He is now a perfect soldier!
Immediately after the experiment, Dr. Erksine is assassinated by an agent of The Red Skulls dangerous association. Rogers, now a completely rebuilt and reconditioned human being, has the powers to take his revenge and also help serve his country in the meantime, becoming known as Captain America.

Good intro to Captain America
This was a great introduction to the Captain America. Chris Evans is really good in the role and I liked how it ran into the Avengers. The sequel looks as though it'll be a lot better.

Great Steelbook for a great film
The Steelbook is a nicely crafted package for this 1-disc blu-ray. The embossing is well detailed and the cover picture is detailed and near perfect. I bought the original shield-embossed triple-play steelbook in 2011 and this is on a par with the workmanship on that one – the indents, embossing and artwork are nicely done. The only let down is that the inside picture that is too dark to clearly see the image. The disc has the blu ray feature film as well as the extras – deleted scenes, making of and good selection of interesting behind the scenes featurettes. A lot of the big superhero films have turned from the fun, righteous and good-guy approach and tend to focus on the darker side - the angst, the painful, the borderline narcissistic/psychotic reasons why somebody would dress up in a cape and mask and beat up bad guys. Sometimes though, when it's done right then you can sit back, popcorn in hand and just enjoy the experience. If you’ve seen the Indiana Jones films and The Rocketeer, you know what you’re in for - some good old fashioned pulp action and adventure from start to finish. As a Captain America fan, I was looking forward to this and prayed that they would get it ever-so-right this time around (if you’ve seen the god-awful 1991 version, you’ll understand), and as a comic character, he’s derided as a boring old granddaddy figure, old fashioned and irrelevant to the modern darker era. However, Captain America is to Marvel what Superman is to DC – representing the good, the honest and the best of what a superhero should be and in turn, showing the readers the qualities of what a good person should be. Appointing an experienced director and a top notch cast lifts this from a potentially embarrassing flag waving advert for the USA, to an exciting period action drama film that has a fitting mix of 40’s imagery with the sci-fi effects. Think Flash Gordon meets the Untouchables and you’ll get the idea. Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving handle their roles with the right level of seriousness and brevity to get the message across, and Hayley Atwell as Agent Carter stamps her authority on the picture with a great performance as the hard-as-nails love interest that brings Steve Rogers’ journey full circle. Chris Evans wasn't the first name you'd think of for an iconic character like this, but he plays it with a wide-eyed seriousness that suits the characters of Steve Rogers and Captain America perfectly - a sickly, skinny little man with a sense of duty, respect and honour, who desperately wants to do what's right and fight for freedom; and the superheroic Sentinel of Liberty, the ultimate fighting machine leading men into battle against the ratzis. The key thing about this film is that it isn't really about Captain America the superhero - it's about Steve, the man who would stand up for what's right and for the downtrodden, his belief in freedom and doing what's right, and never to back down from the bullies no matter how big they are. It doesn’t set out to be a superhero movie because the character’s abilities are less important than what he goes through to get them and how he uses them. You see the man before the superman, if you’ll pardon the pun… I gave it 4 out of 5 because, although it sticks maybe 80% to the Cap origin, there’s little made of his sidekick Bucky Barnes – he’s pretty dull, not very interesting and almost a distraction whenever he appears on screen. This is a good lead-in to the Avengers' films, and ties in with the other Marvel heroes like Thor and Iron Man, but as a stand-alone movie it ticks all the boxes for kids and grown-ups alike.
