Sylvia (Anne Raitt) leads a quiet life caring for her sister Hilda (Sarah Stephenson) who has complex care needs. Their lonely suburban existence is accentuated by a social awkwardness that detaches them from the community and fuels a life of seclusion and despair.
Released in 1971 to critical acclaim, Mike Leigh's debut feature film is a haunting study of social isolation. Uncompromising and deeply affecting, the film introduced Leigh's unique and highly influential natural style that he has continued to develop over a 50 year career.

Finally on Blu-ray, and worth the wait!
Ignore the Region B labels on the back cover & disc; I've tested it, this BFI Blu-ray is region free and will play on Region A or C Blu-ray players. Picture & audio quality are massively improved over previous DVD releases, and picture is in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Also, unlike the DVDs, this Blu-ray has optional English subtitles, which are always a welcome addition. Extras: Mike Leigh's audio commentary from the 2015 Soda DVD release In Conversation: Mike Leigh and Les Blair Produced by the University of London in 1972, this rare never before released interview features Mike Leigh and producer Les Blair in conversation with David Sharp. (1972, 28min, B&W) Interview with Mike Leigh Filmed after a screening of Nuts in May, Mike Leigh discusses the film, his early career and his approach to filmmaking with film researcher and programmer Neil McGlone. (2019, 36min, colour) Bleak Moments: 50 Years On A newly recorded interview with the acclaimed filmmaker about Bleak Moments. (2021, 9min, colour) Image Gallery (2min, no audio) Booklet (20 pages) with an essay on the film by Ellen Cheshire, and a 1972 review of the film by David Wilson bottom line: this new BFI Blu-ray improves upon the older DVD releases in pretty much every conceivable way. For fans of the film it's a dream come true. Highest recommendation
