The Dark Knight of Halloween
The service from Zavvi was, as usual, perfect! The product was delivered promptly and securely. The product itself, Batman: The Long Halloween Part 1 is, by and large, a faithful adaptation of the now classic comic book by Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale (although let’s see how Part 2 pans out). Given Warner Brothers Animation’s recent desire to try and “improve” their comic book adaptations by changing key elements, it is refreshing to see that they have listened to the fans (so far) and only done that sparingly here, notably to include sequences that are visually dazzling and enjoyable. These include a chase involving the Batmobile and a fight in Gotham’s Chinatown. Jensen Ackles is a very competent Batman/Bruce Wayne and his interplay with Alistair Duncan’s Alfred is comical. Equally impressive is the late Naya Rivera as Catwoman/Selina Kyle who somehow manages to have even more exposure in the film adaptation. Troy Baker returns with his quite decent impersonation of Mark Hamill’s Joker. Josh Duhamel’s Harvey Dent and Billy Burke’s Commissioner Gordon are both key and well cast here. There is also another interesting foil added to Julie Nathanson’s Gilda Dent that helps to explain the emotional strain put upon Gotham’s District Attorney. The whole affair has a nice film noir feel to it befitting the comic, which isn’t always easy to manage in Batman’s world. If there are any criticisms, they are that Catwoman’s costume does not match that from the comic (although that is minor), whilst at times the heavy lines used to draw the characters can be distracting. However, this is not a bad addition to Batman’s cinematic universe at all.
