What separates this from the Disney live-action remakes of animated classics is that Dean DeBlois, who wrote, directed, and produced the hit trilogy, will be making his live-action debut as writer and director of this project.
As with the previous films, it's a loose adaptation of the novels by Cressida Cowell.
Pre-production is already underway, with DeBlois currently searching for the cast who will help bring Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel in the animated series) and his village of Vikings back to the big screen.
The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the team are taking considerable time and effort in creating their CGI dragons.
The challenge is to make sure they look close enough to their animated counterparts, whilst also making them seem realistic enough for live action - in other words, they need to be cuddly without seeming scary to younger audiences.
We'll see the results in just over two years, as Universal have a release date on the cards of Friday 14th March 2025.
