Home Ent Collector’s Guide: September 2024

It’s the time of month where we once again remind you to use your credit card responsibly…

September’s new releases are almost with us, and the next few weeks have dozens of steelbooks, 4K remasters and limited-edition Blu-ray titles that collectors and cinephiles will need on their shelves.

Don’t just take our word for it – dive into the week-by-week breakdown below. As always, there’s the usual disclaimer; release dates are correct at the time of writing but do keep an eye on our site for any last-minute changes.

Monday, 2nd September

The first big steelbook release of the month is the 4K remaster of Orca, The Killer Whale from StudioCanal’s Cult Classics brand. This post-Jaws monster movie pits explorers played by Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling against a whale hungry for revenge – and human flesh – after they unwittingly kill its mate.

Ever-so-slightly more highbrow thrills in 4K arrive courtesy of the Criterion Collection, with the rerelease of director Billy Wilder’s noir classic Double Indemnity. Finally, Second Run have remastered an underseen, deeply violent conspiracy thriller set in the heart of Ancient Egypt; 1966’s Pharaoh may be described as a classical biblical epic, but it’s unlike anything else from the genre’s heyday.

Monday, 9th September

Criterion Collection

Another 1940s noir is getting a 4K makeover courtesy of Criterion, with melodrama Mildred Pierce – starring an Oscar winning Joan Crawford – leading their slate, but its 88 Films who dominate this week’s release schedule. These are a variety of martial arts classics, led by The Tai Chi Master in 4K; Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh’s fight choreography has never looked better.

The studio has more ass-kicking entertainment in the form of The Shadow Boxing – the grammatically awkward title for the sequel to The Spiritual Boxer – and criminal underworld epic To Kill A Mastermind. It’s not just martial arts movies from this era of Hong Kong and Chinese cinema the studio is rereleasing though, with erotic dramas. Libido: The Urge To Love and The Golden Lotus arriving too.

One of those movies has a pre-fame Jackie Chan in a small supporting role. Blind buy them both and find out which.

Monday, 16th September

You wait ages for one Christopher Nolan Ultimate Collector’s Edition 4K steelbook to show up, and then two arrive at once. Inception and Interstellar have both received this treatment, with the sets featuring a poster, postcards and character bookmarks.

They’re not the only blockbuster steelbooks coming your way this week, with two very different 2024 action hits arriving in the shape of Alex Garland’s Civil War and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die. If those high-octane, big budget thrills aren’t enough, Arrow are bringing The Chronicles Of Riddick to 4K, and Warner Bros. are celebrating the 85th anniversary of Batman with a whopping 10-disc collector’s edition set of the animated movies.

Also coming to 4K this week is the classic Orson Welles thriller Touch Of Evil, courtesy of Eureka!, with other rereleases including nautical thriller The Island starring Michael Caine, a BFI boxset of early works from celebrated filmmaker Michael Powell and silent classic Pandora’s Box from Masters Of Cinema.

Finally, Crunchyroll are launching a Limited-Edition boxset of romantic anime Tomo-chan is a girl!, including a 76-page art book and sticker sheets.

Monday, 23rd September

We’re kicking off this week with a Zavvi Exclusive 4K steelbook of Joker, arriving in plenty of time for you to catch up before musical sequel Folie A Deux hits cinemas. Also getting the steelbook treatment is the family fantasy Stardust, and for the ultimate 4K binge-watch, the complete boxset of Friends is a must-have.

From there, several boutique labels are unveiling handfuls of new titles on the same day. Instead of breaking down each title, here’s a much quicker list – there is a lot to get through.

  • 88 Films; Erotic Ghost Story I-III, Gaira’s Guts Trilogy, Magnificent Bodyguards
  • Arrow Video; Love, Death And Apocalypse, The Threat
  • BFI; The Outcasts
  • Eureka! Classics; The Champions, Two Taoist Tales

But if one steelbook isn’t enough, don’t worry; Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, Batman: The Killing Joke and the third season of Chucky could be yours too, whilst more 4K thrills can be had with Second Sight’s limited-edition rerelease of The Hitcher.
