Fans have been eager to find out more about the film, which will see the return of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris).
Yet so far our only tease of what to expect has been the mid-credits sequence of the recent Ms. Marvel finale, which managed to leave us with even more questions than we had before.
With this in mind, we've compiled everything we know about The Marvels so far.
How Does It Link To The Ms. Marvel Finale?
So far, no official plot synopsis has been released - all we know is that it will act as a sequel to Captain Marvel, in addition to picking up where WandaVision and Ms. Marvel left off. However, fans have several theories about what's in store.
Before Carol Danvers showed up in the Ms. Marvel finale, the show had the unexpected reveal that Kamala had a genetic "mutation" (cue the X-Men Animated Series fanfare), stopping short of using the term "mutant".
Some fans are already speculating that within the MCU 'mutants' will instead be referred to as "Marvels".
As further evidence to this, there have been ongoing rumours that Captain Marvel is a mutant, while Monica Rambeau's DNA was rewritten after entering Scarlet Witch's hex, leading to her developing superpowers. Could this be a secret soft launch for the X-Men?
The post-credit scene of Ms. Marvel showed Kamala Khan getting whisked away from her bedroom after her bangle starts glowing, with Carol Danvers appearing in her place.
This doesn't appear to be a body swap comedy - instead, it seems to suggest the appearance of the Kree Nega-Band, an artefact that can give those wearing it superhuman strength and, crucially, the power to teleport.
There's also some speculation that this is what Kamala's bangle really is, which would be a good way to throw the girl from New Jersey into an intergalactic adventure with her idol.
The Weirdest Plot Rumours
It's best to take fan rumours with a pinch of salt, especially when it comes to Marvel movies, but there's one so wild we hope it's true.
As stated by Inverse, it's reported that approximately a third of the film will take place on the planet Aladna, a place where people sing instead of speaking.
That's right folks, this could be the first MCU musical!
This isn't as outlandish as it sounds, as Danvers visited the planet in a 2014 Captain Marvel issue and earlier this year, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness gave us a musical note battle, which felt like a warm-up for a bigger musical sequence.
The reason the characters visit this planet is because Danvers is apparently married to its leader, and while there, the Marvels get their new costumes.
It sounds like a lot of fun, but who knows if this has any resemblance to the movie that we will actually see.
Cast And Crew
In addition to Larson, Parris, and Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson will be reprising his role of Nick Fury, likely meaning that next year's Secret Invasion will tie into the plot.
Other actors we expect to be returning are Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur, who play Khan's older brother Aamir, mother Muneeba, and father Yusuf respectively.
This appeared to be confirmed in a hastily deleted Instagram post in 2021, but considering Carol Danvers has just arrived in their house, it makes sense they'd appear.
As for new characters, Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat) has been cast as reportedly the film's villain, although this is yet to be confirmed.
Elsewhere, South Korean heartthrob Park Seo-joon will appear in a currently undisclosed role - could he be Danvers new partner on the karaoke planet? Yes, we are holding out hope that this is the plot!
Finally, Nia DaCosta, who directed 2021's Candyman reboot/sequel, will be taking over in the director's chair. This makes her the first Black woman to helm an MCU project.
Release Date
The Marvels is scheduled to release in UK cinemas on 28th July 2023. It was originally scheduled for release in November 2022, but was delayed alongside several Marvel projects due to the pandemic.
We'll update this with more information when we have it.
