February: the month of Valentines, pancakes... and a whole host of brand new steelbooks.
The next few weeks see the long-awaited arrivals of more Disney+ physical releases, a treasure trove of cinematic classics remastered in 4K, and steelbook sets of some of the most high-profile recent blockbusters.
As always, release dates are subject to change, so keep an eye on our site for up-to-date listings. Until then, here’s everything that will be arriving in our warehouse and shipping in February.
Monday, 3rd February
The Venom trilogy reached a surprisingly emotional climax with The Last Dance, and the 4K steelbook – as well as the 3-film boxset – of the Spider-Man villain’s final adventure leads this week’s new releases. Aside from this, it’s all remastered 4K classics, from the cheesy (Red Dawn) to some of the greatest of all time (the BFI’s reissue of Seven Samurai and the Criterion Collection’s update of Winchester ‘73).
In terms of small screen releases, more vintage Doctor Who is coming your way, with the original ninth season getting a highly sought-after boxset.
Monday, 10th February
The first of this month’s Disney+ physical releases arrives this week, as The Mandalorian spin-off Ahsoka gets the 4K steelbook treatment. Collectors should also take note of the Korean disaster blockbuster Project Silence, the week’s other Ultra HD steelbook release, which offers thrills completely different to what you’ll find in a Galaxy Far, Far Away – namely, genetically modified dogs who are hungry for human blood.
In addition to this, there are three remastered comedy classics – a duo of John Hughes-scripted classics (Weird Science and Pretty in Pink), and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love, which is returning to the Criterion Collection in 4K. Finally, Arrow Video have a limited-edition Blu-ray containing two stylish Japanese crime movies; A Certain Killer and A Killer’s Key.
Monday, 17th February
First up this week, Arrow Video have remastered two cult favourites from horror pioneer Tobe Hooper; the 80s sequel to his beloved Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and his sci-fi oddity Lifeforce. Also on the way from the boutique label are a tribute to classic westerns and neo-noir thrillers (The Last Stop in Yuma County), an Italian Giallo precursor (Mill of the Stone Women) and the hyper-violent Japanese action classics of the Game trilogy.
For left-field comic book thrills, Constantine is coming to 4K for its 20th anniversary – steelbooks of the Keanu Reeves vehicle will arrive shortly after – and the divisive Joker sequel is getting a steelbook. For a more family friendly adventure, Paddington In Peru is arriving on 4K, and the three-film boxset will keep all ages entertained.
Next up, three films from Third Window Films, specialists in Japanese and Korean cinema, including two from director Toshiharu Ikeda; a hyperviolent 80s revenge movie (Mermaid Legend) and a more meditative romance (Scent of a Spell). Acclaimed director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s underseen take on the “pink film” genre – Bumpkin Soup – closes out the label’s stacked month.
A plethora of remastered vintage Hollywood efforts will arrive courtesy of Indicator; Harriet Craig, Madigan, Queen Bee, Now and Forever, Peter Ibbetson and The Bingo Long Travelling All Stars & Motor Kings. Finally, there’s a double pack of both Street Trash movies, and a 4K remaster of The Lion in Winter from StudioCanal’s Vintage Classics.
Monday, 24th February
We’re closing out the month with the third season of The Mandalorian, and a slew of 4K titles, from the brand new (Heretic) and the beloved (Amadeus and American Pie) to the cult favourites (Cruising and Blackhat from Arrow, Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos from BFI, and Crossing Delancey from Criterion).
The BFI also have a five-disc set of director Chantal Akerman’s early films, including Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, which was named the greatest film of all time in the BFI’s 2022 poll, toppling Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo from the number 1 spot.
Finally, Second Run have the Kafkaesque Polish oddity Golem, and Radiance have a typically eclectic slate of rereleases; German heist thriller The Cat, Yakuza actioner Hokuriku Proxy War, indie romcom What Happened Was... and Hong Kong New Wave efforts Nomad and My Heart Is That Eternal Rose.
