It has been a while since we last saw the cheeky Merc With A Mouth in action, with it now being three years since Deadpool 2 hit the big screen.

Whilst a third movie was given the go ahead, Disney's acquisition of Fox in March 2019 left a question mark over this since the character's violent and foul-mouthed ways doesn’t quite fit in with the family friendly brand the house of mouse has created with Marvel.

However, we now know that not only is Deadpool 3 officially happening, but it will have the same sweary and savage tone as the previous two entries, which is good news for fans who have grown to love the series for this.

Here's everything we know about Deadpool 3 so far, from cast, to release date, and its role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Will Deadpool 3 be set in the MCU?

Deadpool
20th Century Fox

With Disney now owning the Deadpool property, fans were left wondering whether the character would make an appearance in the MCU, potentially in the third movie.

There was much excitement then when Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige officially confirmed Deadpool 3 will be set within the world of the MCU, revealing in an interview with Collider that the anti-hero will be "a very different type of character" for the beloved series.

How he will be brought into the MCU and what role he will play within it, well they are both valid questions and much speculation can be had.

And who knows... maybe Deadpool will pop up in another MCU film or TV show before his third movie, giving us clues as to what to expect. Marvel love to tease fans so this is definitely likely.

Does this mean it will be toned down?

20th Century Fox

One thing is for certain though, Deadpool 3 won't be in any way toned down just because its taking place in the currently very family friendly MCU.

Also in his interview with Collider, Feige confirmed the upcoming third movie will indeed be R-rated like the previous two instalments, so a 15 here in the UK.

So bring on the shocking violence, crude humour and bounty of swear words.

What will Deadpool 3 be about?

20th Century Fox

With the script still in early development and Marvel Studios remained tight-lipped on what the future holds for our beloved Deadpool, no details have been revealed yet regarding the plot of Deadpool 3.

However, with the movie taking place in the MCU, it is likely to tie to other events going on in the series, although once again we don't currently know what these will be yet either.

In an interview with Variety star Ryan Reynolds did say though the creative team behind Deadpool 3 are “looking to go in a completely different direction" with the film, so be prepared to expect the unexpected.

Is Ryan Reynolds and other cast members returning?

20th Century Fox

Reprising the titular role, Ryan Reynolds will once again be donning the infamous red suit as Deadpool in the upcoming third movie. Let's be honest, they really couldn't have done Deadpool 3 without him.

No other cast members have confirmed yet that they will also be returning, but it is likely the likes of Cable (Josh Brolin), Domino (Zazie Beetz), Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) will join Reynolds' Wade Wilson in the third movie.

Of course Deadpool's girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) was revealed to have been saved from dying in the post-credits sequence of the second movie, so it is safe to expect she will be back too for the threequel.

Who is writing and directing Deadpool 3?

20th Century Fox

No director is currently attached to Deadpool 3 with the script in early development, but we do know it probably won't be David Leitch (who helmed the first two films) in the chair as he has a busy schedule directing three upcoming movies, all of which are currently in the works.

He's not the only one not coming back for the third movie, as whilst Deadpool and Deadpool 2's writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were working on a script back in 2019, they departed from the project for unknown reasons.

Stepping into their shoes are Bob's Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, better known as the Molyneux Sisters, who are currently penning the script.

Reynolds is helping to oversee the screenplay, telling Deadline that he believes the sisters are a "perfect fit" for the film.

Is there a trailer?

20th Century Fox

With Deadpool 3 in early development and filming not due to start until 2022 at the very earliest, there is currently no trailer for the highly anticipated sequel.

And there probably won't be for a while unfortunately, but don't worry, we will update you here as soon as it does land.

When is the release date for Deadpool 3?

20th Century Fox

We are still waiting on a release date to be announced for Deadpool 3, but with filming due to start in 2022 at the earliest, it is likely the movie will arrive sometime in 2023 or 2024.

It all depends upon when cameras start rolling, and as Feige stated in an interview with Collider, Marvel Studios have plenty of other projects to film and release first.

He said: "It will not be [filming] this year... We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun."

So we have to be patient when it comes to Deadpool 3, but at least we know Marvel Studios are hard at work delivering other exciting superhero films which will help ease the wait.
