We like to joke around over at Zavvi towers, but be assured that this article is not a joke. The original Pacific Rim is a masterpiece in direction by Guillermo Del Toro, and a great westernisation of the Japanese Kaiju and Mecha genres. If you've never heard of Pacific Rim before, it's all about giant monsters that come from beneath the ocean and rain terror on humanity. So the human race does what the human race does best- make an invention that will wipe them all out. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba, just to name a few. These weapons to combat the giant Kaiju plaguing the world are Jagers, which are essentially giant mechs which are incredibly cool.

True to the Inspiration
It might be easy to equate the design of the Jagers to Transformers, however, the iconic Jagers like Gipsy Danger, Cherno Alpha, and Coyote Tango are all actually based on Japanese Real-Robots designed by a man named Kunio Okawara, who also did the original designs from the seminal Anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. Del Toro looked at these designs when conceiving the Jagers, and this looks to be further exaggerated with Pacific Rim: Uprising, where the Jagers are more streamlined and take on super robot look that is more evocative of Anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Drift Compatible
One of the coolest things about Pacific Rim is the way that the pilots sync up and take on the Kaiju through something called 'The Drift', which takes both of the pilots and lets them connect their minds telepathically to take the strain of mentally controlling a giant robot, which means for some reason they all have to be really good at Martial Arts. We're not complaining, of course- Seeing a hundred metre tall robot rocket punch a monster in the face is pretty satisfying.
John Boyega is in it.
After Attack the Block and Star Wars, Boyega is looking to become one of Hollywood's most iconic actors around, and with his appearance in the movie as Stacker Pentecost's son, we cannot wait to see what he brings to the table in the lead role, as he pilots Gipsy Danger's successor, Gipsy Avenger- which is sleeker, cooler and has a REALLY COOL pilot suit to go along with it. We've not yet seen much from the movie, and still don't know who his co-pilot will be, but if the recent teaser is anything to go by, it's still going to be one of the coolest things put to screen.
Robots. Punch. Monsters.
Look, Robots punching Monsters is all you really need to know about Pacific Rim 2, it's such a wonderfully simple concept. In the original movie, we see Gipsy Danger also bust out a sword attached to its arm, cutting across the moon in a nod to 2007's Gundam 00, where the Gundam Exia does pretty much the exact same thing. This time around, it's looking like the Jagers have even more weapons in their arsenal, so cool fights are definitely on the cards for this upcoming blockbuster.
The World Saves the World, Again.
One of the greatest things about Pacific Rim was that it was a truly international Movie. Most movies center around America saving the world, but when it comes to Pacific Rim, we see all nationalities banding together to "Cancel the Apocalypse", as Stacker Pentecost would have said. With returning characters and more, we expect nothing less than a masterpiece from Pacific Rim: Uprising.
