The Invasion (Arrow 4k Ltd Ed)

Another superb Arrow release, complete with legacy extras and new contextualising features, both on the disc and in the informative booklet. The transfer is nothing short of stunning, with bit rates continually up in the 90s and above, making this the definitive release of this movie. Always the lesser of the Body Snatchers adaptations, and with a troubled Wachowski-assisted production to boot, this new Arrow edition goes a long way toward a timely re-appraisal of this feature, post-Covid, with its somewhat prescient view of a pandemic-ravaged world. This film has always struggled with its colour-saturated visuals in its home media incarnations, but Arrow's faithful, yet sensitive, restoration rights all of the previous wrongs, making this a joy to behold on re-watching. For my money the casting was always the issue here, with Kidman beatiful, but glacial, Craig looking uncomfortable to be there, Cartwright shoehorned in to provide a tenuous link to the much superior '78 remake, and the rest of the cast feeling bland at best. An interesting failure, given Arrow's unassailably deluxe 4k treatment, and well overdue a re-watch and re-appraisal. Don't sleep through this worthy re-issue!
