One of the best story movies
5The tale is fantastic and keeps you interested from the beginning to the end. The musical moments are also great! The f/x were great for it's time and I wonder how they came out with the idea for creating such original characters.Â

Barebones release, still worth it
5I have digibook 30-anniversary edition on Blu-Ray, so I opted for this bare-bones UltraHD release and will keep both. What to say about this movie - it is absolutely classic and a great example of Jim Henson's genius. The 4K release is looking really good, and while not the game-changer in terms of picture quality, it is quite worth the upgrade.

Great but oh so grainy!
4Labyrinth is one of those timeless classics. So entertaining - great musical numbers, fairytale story, and Jim Hensons wizardry! The 4K version is a double edged sword though. The sound is excellent : Dolby True HD, and very balanced. Colours are excellent as is the detail, but as with sooo many 4K scans of older films, it’s very VERY grainy. The worst for grain that I’ve seen so far. I’ve no idea around the tech behind scanning older films to 4K, but grain looks to be an issue the older the original film. But this is very bad. I’ll still recommend the 4K version though - but be warned about the level of grain on every frame. Enjoy, and remember : jump, magic - jump! 😂

A more modern take on The Wizard of Oz.
5Jennifer Connelly plays a teenage girl named Sarah who lives in a fantasy world within her books. After being left to babysit her little brother Tobey on short notice she wishes the goblins within her books take little Tobey away and relieve her of his responsibility. She must now travel through a labyrinth to retriever her brother within 13-hours to save him from being turned into a goblin. Along the way the Goblin King, played by David Bowie, sings, dances and tempts Sarah with various distractions. Through her good nature, Sarah befriends several unlikely characters along the way and together they travel through the labyrinth to save her bother. Watching this movie again through adult eyes I was pleasantly surprised at how brilliant this film is and how it draws from many other fantasy films like Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz, and Snow White. Labyrinth is full of allegories and deeper meaning truths about life that we are all too quick to forget. The puppetry is beautifully done and it truly feel saddened that we may never see such a whimsical film ever again. I never thought I would say this about a movie full of puppets, but it really is one of the best movies I have ever seen. In the 4K transfer the biggest upgrade are the colors - skin tones look more realistic, and the color of puppets is more varied and vibrant. There is also an increase in detail and with it there is a fair amount more of film grain that is worth mentioning. I'm personally not bothered at all by film grain though I understand there is a whole generation of people who are use to watching everything in a digital format. Sound is consistent, without getting too loud during the musical parts and with voices remaining understandable throughout. I found this to be a benefit with Dolby Atmos remasters even though I do not have an Atmos setup. In summation, I would say the standard blu-ray release is perfectly fine if that's what you already have but the 4K transfer is still the one to have. The 4K transfer does have a fair bit of film grain, so maybe go for the blu-ray if that bothers you.

Labyrinth
5One of my first 4K DVD’s and it’s absolutely stunning, the case the disc is in is so good looking with all the characters present on it. The disc it’s self is amazing the quality of the movie is beautiful and the sound is incredible, will definitely be ordering more 4K movies soon 😀

Never looked better
5Considering the age of the film I was a little sceptical at how much of an improvement the 4K transfer would be over the standard blu ray, but I have to say it has never looked better. Some heavy grain, which is to be expected, but on the whole the picture is pin sharp, with great contrast and the colours are so vivid. This is the way I want to present one of my favourite movies to my baby son for the first time.
