What is the 3DS?
The rumours had been round for ages, but that didn’t stop everyone’s jaws dropping the moment Nintendo officially unveiled the 3D follow-up to its DS handheld. Especially as it doesn’t require cumbersome 3D glasses to enjoy its startling effects, and even offers 3D picture-taking and movie-watching!
Featuring the traditional dual-screen, the top 3.5-inch gaming display is designed to produced crisp 3D images, while the bottom 3D-less display works as the touch panel. The sleek little machine also promises improved graphics capabilities over previous DS models, as well as incorporating new motion-sensor controls, which Nintendo is confident will lead to "interesting new gaming ideas from developers".
What else can it do?
While the 3D visuals were enough to get fists punching the air in excitement, Nintendo also proudly showed off its new built-in camera with two camera lenses, enabling you to take photographs in 3D! Plus, it also carries the potential of watching 3D films on the machine, with Nintendo demoing trailers from upcoming 3D movies from Disney, Dreamworks and Disney. Better than those silly little screens on backs of airplane seats, eh?
To complete the announcement, Nintendo revealed a tantalising list of third-party publishers currently working on titles for the forthcoming system. This included an exclusive Metal Gear Solid adventure, DJ Hero 3D and high-speed racing game Ridge Racer.

Great product
I am really pleased with my Nintendo 3DS and I am enjoying the 3d. I previously had the DS and this is so much better. I am still learning about it but I know it will give me hours of fun. It was easy to set up too.

Nintendo 3DS Console (Aqua Blue)
I personally didn’t like the 3DS when I first tried it I played it for 10 minutes in a local game shop using the Augmented Reality Cards (AR) and walked away not impressed at all. I thought the screen wasn’t clear and very blurry and felt because of this playing the games where very difficult. I left with sore eyes and a sore head and didn’t think much of the machine at all and thought it wasn’t worth the price. However my son kept going on and on at me to buy one with this and the release of Zelda and a bit of a price drop on the console itself I thought I’d give the console another go so I went out and bought one. I can honestly say I was wrong about the 3DS. Once you see what the 3DS can do and once you get used to the 3D it is a very impressive piece of kit. When you first start up the 3DS you’ll go through a short setting up process which will help you calibrate the screen and show you the best sitting position for the best viewing and 3D experience for yourself. This will help get rid of that blur and distortion I mentioned before. Once set up you’ll find various apps already stored onto the system including: A 3D Camera the quality is ok and it doesn’t have a flash but in the right lighting conditions you can get some really nice 3D images Nintendo 3DS sound where you can record your own sounds Mii Maker to create your own Mii's There’s 2 games one which you will need AR cards that are provided with the console. Using these cards and the systems camera you play a variety of mini games including shooting targets and a sort of marble madness style game. There is also a game called Face Raiders where you can take pictures of family and friends and shoot them with balls whilst they fly round your living room. Once you’ve done a quick software update you’ll also have access to the eshop where you can view 3D trailers and download classic Nintendo and dsi ware games straight to you memory card. As well as the above the 3DS also has a built in pedometer, can be used to explorer the internet as well as play and compete with friends online there’s also a log to keep an eye how many steps you’ve walked how long you’ve been playing games and used the software etc. The 3D effect depends on the game your playing I own 4 games currently Zelda and Street Fighter which both have fantastic 3D effects these are games you’ll want to play in 3D however the other 2 games I currently own have ok 3D effects but don’t stand out as much as Zelda a SF4 and it wouldn’t make a great deal of difference playing these with the 3d switched off. 3D on or off though the graphics for the games themselves are a significant improvement over the DS. I’ve downloaded 3D trailers for Mario Kart, Mario, Star Fox and Resident Evil on to the 3DS all 4 look fantastic in 3D so I’m looking forward to those and hoping developers will take their time in releasing good looking 3D games rather than just rush games out to build up a decent sized back catalogue. The beauty of the 3DS though is you don’t have to play in 3D (although that’s the whole point I guess) if you feel like the 3D is getting to much you can switch to 2D my son doest like playing in 3D at all and prefers playing in 2D however I’ve constantly got the 3D switched on now that I’ve got used it. Having the 3D on though will drain you battery allot quicker but the 3DS does come with a handy doc station to charge the system or you can just plug it straight into the wall and play whilst charging. I’m glad I gave the 3DS a second look I’m quite happy what I paid for it and there are some fantastic games due out within the next year I just hope we get a Mario game sooner rather than later.

3ds review
An amazing product that easily beats all other current hand-held consoles. At first it does put quite a bit of strain on your eyes and can give you a slight headache, but bear with it, because after you find your optimal viewing angle you will be simply blown away by the capabilities of this nifty little guy. Even the additional features that aren't optimised for 3d like the web browser and e shop work really smoothly and are entirely satisfying. 5 out of 5 stars and totally worth the money I paid for it.
