During an interview with Complex, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn confirmed that a third entry into the Guardians of the Galaxy series would be coming to our screens. However, it's not yet been decided if the 'Super' director would be returning to the series for its third iteration.
“There will be a ‘Guardians 3,’ that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out,” Gunn revealed. “I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

With Marvel planning so far ahead, its unsure when Guardians of the Galaxy 3 might be coming to our screens. As far as we're aware, the film is still without a script or director, so it might be a while before we see the film at all. It's still not concrete that Gunn would also be returning to the series, as now he has directed 3 superhero movies back-to-back. To speculate, it's most likely that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would fall into Marvel's Phase 4, after Avengers: Infinity War.
Guardians of the Galaxy was not actually Gunn's first foray into the superhero genre, in 2010 the accliaimed director made 'Super'. Starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon, it was a dark take into the psyche of a man who thinks it would be a good idea to become a violent vigilante to cope with a breakup.
With the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 coming up very soon, I'm sure Marvel fans worldwide will be incredibly excited at the prospect of Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
