As you may recall, the ending of the 2021 movie set up a future adventure, with Ernie Hudson's Winston Zeddemore reminiscing about the good old days with Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis).
As his voiceover continues, we see that Zeddemore brought the classic Ghostbusters car - the Ecto-I - to New York City, returning it to its home at the now abandoned firehouse – a.k.a. Ghostbusters HQ!
It appeared that Zeddemore is keen to continue the legacy of the Ghostbusters and expand it further with him leading the way, therefore setting the scene for a sequel.
Whilst it may be unclear what story the follow-up film will tell, we do know that cast members Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard will all reprise their roles with Ghostbusters: Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan taking over as director from Jason Reitman.
One name absent from the various reports is Hudson himself, despite the fact that his character spearheaded the scene that teased the next adventure.
However, earlier this year the actor confirmed via various interviews that he will indeed be starring in the upcoming sequel, telling The Kelly Clarkson Show that his character Winston has "a little bit more freedom" now thanks to the fact he is "a billionaire".
Speaking to Zavvi whilst promoting his next film Champions, Hudson delivered further good news for fans, stating that filming is due to start "very, very" soon in the UK.
He said: "Even though we haven’t totally signed everything yet, I understand that it’s happening and it will be in your neighbourhood, which is exciting, I’ve never actually worked in the UK before. It’s coming up very, very quickly."
With a current release date of 20th December 2023 set for the Ghostbusters sequel, it'll be interesting to see if this moves given the fact they are yet to start shooting the film.
But then again, with that start date only round the corner, who knows - maybe we will get a Ghostbusters film this year as a Christmas treat!
