Open world fun
If you're looking for an open world game with freedom to move about as you like, then Far Cry 2 is a good investment, especially at this point. If you like first-person shooters, then even better, there's a few dozen weapons to find and use, and several vehicles to drive with. Lots of shooting in this game. After some initial story tasks you are given freedom to move anywhere on the map. Although this is not and RPG, and you can't find unique items or whatnot, you can choose what missions to do most of the time. There aren't many quick travel locations, so mostly you need to drive from destination to another. Doing main story missions does open new opportunities and missions, but you can take care of everything optional first, if you wish. There are also over 200 diamond briefcases scattered all over the map, and you can get diamonds from completing or accepting missions. These can be used to unlock new weapons, weapon upgrades, etc. Far Cry 2 isn't perfect by any means. Some missions and areas only open after completing main story missions. The AI soldiers can make really silly moves sometimes, yet can sometimes aim like a sniper with almost any weapon, even on normal game difficulty. There are plenty of save points, but even so there's always the chance of sudden death, and I felt that there could've been even more places to save at. Moving between locations can get more tedious when you clear the map of missions, but until then it's fun to move around. Everyone outside villages and safehouses is your enemy, which can feel silly at times, but at least you know you can shoot anything that moves. Shooting controls feel ok, but some vehicles are really quirky to use and board/unboard. It took me more than dozen evenings to finish the game with majority of missions done, so there's potentially lots to play here. The keywords are still 'open world' and 'first-person shooter', and if those are your thing, then I can highly recommend Far Cry 2. It's not the latest or greatest, but still fun stuff!
