underrated open-ended goodness
Crackdown is an early xbox360 title giving you the role of an "agent", employed by "The Agency" ,an anti-crime organization ,whose role is to stop the 3 criminal groups (Los muertos,The Volk and the Shai-Gen Corporation),that control Pacific City. The protagonist is the result of the experiments of a former Shai-Gen scientist who has created genetically enhanced individuals. You have super-human powers that you can advance through the course of the game by collecting orbs(Agility ones that raise agility and Hidden orbs that raise every attribute) or by actually using the skill. For example, running over gang members raises the driving skill(so does completing some races).Killing enemies while in mid-air raises agility and so does the completion of some rooftop races.Use brutal force to apply the law and you raise your strength One of the main charms of the game is moving around the city jumping from one rooftop to another, especially in higher agility levels.Feels like flying, like some spider-man games or Prototype. The city is big, with some really well designed districts.Agility orbs are everywhere and this will make you want to explore every last inch of the city.Hidden orbs are hidden and not so in plain sight, whereas in some really weird places. For the completionists out there are several car and rooftop races that you can take part in,even though driving is by far the most useless skill.Feels like a wasted opportunity, the game could include some nice chases or other driving sequences but since all "bosses" are not moving outside their territory you just walk in and waste them, plus almost all boss fights except one ,where you have to drive the boss outside the building he hides, are just "walk in and unload everything on him/her" The game feels shallow at parts, the fighting animation is just one same round-house kick, there are like 2-3 different character models per "enemy group",10-15 tops car models. It doesnt get annoying but its a sign of lower production values. Some other drawbacks are that sometimes the crosshair locks-on enemies you just killed,or that during a race if you step on many civilians the agency turns against you, making it almost impossible to complete the race(and its also impossible not to hit a civilian). Generally its a very good game and for such a low price its totally worth it.The achievements are easy generally except for the 2 that require finding all 500 agility and 300 hidden orbs,i'm pretty sure you need a walkthrough for that(or lots of time)
