Welcome to Gotham

Batman (also known by his civilian persona, Bruce Wayne), a superhero created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, joined the DC Universe in 1939, his first appearance being Detective Comics #27. Though the character has undergone many changes throughout the years, having been reimagined by different narrators and adapted to several forms of media outside of the comics (films, TV series, and video games), his established history has — for the most part — retained its core elements.

When Bruce was a child, his parents (Thomas and Martha Wayne) were gunned down by a mugger called Joe Chill. This traumatic event defined the boy’s future, for he dedicated himself to ridding Gotham City of crime. After years of training his mind and body overseas, he returned to his place of origin and assumed the mantle of the Batman, donning a cape and cowl to strike fear into the hearts of evildoers. Initially, the Dark Knight carried out his mission alone, but the influx of so-called supervillains — such as the Joker, Two-Face (Harvey Dent), Killer Croc (Waylon Jones), Bane, and Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel) — necessitated the inclusion of other like-minded individuals. The first of these was Dick Grayson, an orphaned circus performer whom Bruce trained to become his bright-clad sidekick, Robin. Following this point, the Bat-Family slowly expanded its ranks, including the original Boy Wonder’s successors — Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne — and vigilantes like Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Orphan (Cassandra Cain), Spoiler (Stephanie Brown), and Batwoman (Kate Kane).

As previously mentioned, the World’s Greatest Detective has appeared beyond the scope of comics. Notably, he has been the lead in a number of live-action movies, two notable examples being Batman Returns (1992) and The Dark Knight (2008). These have introduced various high-profile actors as the eponymous character, the likes of which include Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson. Despite this fact, many die-hard fans associate the role with Kevin Conroy, who has voiced the animal-themed crimefighter since the ’90s, when the classic animated series was first aired.
