The third main instalment in the popular historical real time strategy series, Age of Empires III expands on what made the old games so great, whilst introducing a number of new, highly innovative gameplay features.
Set almost entirely in the then dubbed ‘New World’ of the era between 1421 and 1850, the game sees the leader of a colony command his followers through a series of campaigns until the once small colony develops into a thriving empire ready for world domination. The most interesting new feature is the ‘Home City’, which is a support system to the player’s efforts in the New World, and a first for the RTS genre. As well as being able to send supplies in the midst of battle, the player will witness the home city develop as they are successful in the New World and go through a number of ‘Ages’, which see technological development in areas such as warships, artillery and economy.
The stunning graphics are a big step up from Age of Empires II and the level of detail has increased greatly. In addition to the main campaign, the game also has expansive skirmish and online multiplayer modes, which will add longevity for the player.
