A New Console On The Scene

The Tokyo-based Sega Corporation is a Japanese multinational video game developer and publisher, founded by Martin Bromley and Richard Stewart in the 1960s. They are well known for their development of various video games consoles and franchises.

Coinciding with the downturn of the arcade business in the 1980s, Sega began developing their own video game consoles, competing with industry competitors – particularly Nintendo Entertainment System. Their first consoles were the SG-1000 and Master System.

In 1988, the Sega Genesis (otherwise known as the Mega Drive outside of North America) was released. Despite struggling to compete in Japan, the console found enormous success following the release of Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991 – even outselling the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Designed to compete with Nintendo’s Mario, Sonic became one of the best-selling video game franchises in history. Due to the character’s popularity, he has also featured in his own film, released in 2020.

Throughout the company’s history, Sega have pioneered some of the most popular video game franchises on the market, including Total War, Yakuza, and the aforementioned Sonic the Hedgehog. From these franchises, they have created their own products, such as Sega Toys.
