A Story Of Growth
Another addition to the Pixar Animation Studios portfolio, Turning Red (2022) is a computer-animated movie that was directed by Domee Shi, a newcomer to the position. Like many of Pixar’s previous releases, the film was a critical and commercial success upon its debut, appealing to a demographic of people both young and old.
The plot of the movie takes place in 2002 and introduces audiences to Meilin “Mei” Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), who is a 13-year-old girl residing in Toronto. Living alongside her overbearing mother, Ming (Sandra Oh), she often dedicates her time to maintaining a temple dedicated to her ancestor Sun Yee and meeting with her friends — Abby Park (Hyein Park), Priya Mangal (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), and Miriam Mendelsohn (Ava Morse) — to enjoy a range of hobbies, of which Ming would not approve if she knew.
Mei’s life takes a sudden turn when she wakes up in the body of an oversized red panda. She soon learns that this transformation occurs in response to heightened states of emotion, and though she tries to hide this fact from her mother, the truth is revealed after Ming embarrasses her at school. Fortunately, neither Ming nor Mei’s father, Jin (Orion Lee), are surprised by this turn of events, revealing that this shapeshifting is typical of the females in the family, all of whom have transformed at the point when they reached the appropriate age. Nevertheless, they warn that doing so has become dangerous in the modern world, so the red panda must be contained in a talisman, a feat that can only be accomplished by conducting a ritual on the night of the Red Moon.
