The Story Of The Red Arrows
For over 40 years The Red Arrows have been thrilling crowds at air shows both across the UK and internationally. They are quite simply the best at what they do. The Red Arrows, officially the Royal Air Force Display Team, are the public face of the RAF, formally promoting recruitment, as well as providing inspiration to significant numbers of those who join the Royal Air Force. Starting out as The Yellowjacks in the early Sixties, the Reds officially took to the skies in 1965 flying the Folland Gnat before transferring to the BAE Hawk advanced trainer in 1979.
The pilots are renowned for their precision, and with such professional excellence, it is little wonder that The Red Arrows never fail to enthrall with their breathtaking displays. Although demanding training routines and years of operational flying experience certainly contribute to this magnificent team's continued position as the premier team in the world, The Red Arrows' pole position is not just down to the pilots or their British aircraft... there is a huge support network necessary to maintain their place as the world's top aerobatic display team. Through fantastic archive and display footage, we tell the story of The Red Arrows from their beginnings in 1964 right through to today.
Little Book Of The Red Arrows (128 Pages)
This book traces the origins of the most famous aerobatic team in the world - the Red Arrows - and looks at how the team prepares for shows, practises death-defying stunts and helps with recruitment. It also outlines the origins and history of the RAF from its military predecessors to the present day. The RAF has played pivotal role in world events for almost 100 years, both in war and peacetime. From its 'finest hour' defending the skies in the Battle of Britain and its part in conflicts such as the Falklands War, Iraq and Afghanistan to its humanitarian role in the Berlin Airlift during the Cold War and in response to natural disasters such as earthquakes, flooding and famine, Winston Churchill's words still ring true: 'Never... was so much owed by so many to so few.' The story spans amazing technological advances from the era of balloons, manned kites and airships through biplanes and monoplanes and on to the fast jets, transport aircraft and helicopters of today.
It explores how the RAF has evolved in response to the winds of political, economic and global change in the past and how it will do so again in the future, defying stunts and helps with recruitment.
