The Desert Fox:
James Mason delivers a strong performance in the title role of this sympathetic study of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. In the early 40s, Rommel's juggernaut Afrika Korps dominated North Africa. But as he cam to the painful realisation that his Fuhrer was destroying German, his ingrained sense of duty pushed him into a conspiracy against Hitler. Co-starring Jessica Tandy as Rommel's wife and Cedric Hardwicke as another anti-Hitler conspirator, The Desert Fox is an intimate look at one of the most respected military tacticians of modern times, openly admired by both those who followed him into combat and those who faced him on the field of battle.
The Hunters:
With its electrifying flight sequences and high-powered cast, The Hunters is a mesmerising film based on the best-selling novel by veteran fighter pilot James Salter. Set during the height of the Korean War, the story centres on Major Cleve Saville (Robert Mitchum), a master of the newly operational F-86 Sabre fighter jet. But adept as he is at flying, Saville's personal life takes a nosedive when he falls in love with his wingman's (Lee Phillips) beautiful wife (May Britt). To make matters worse, Saville must cope with a loud-mouthed rookie (Robert Wagner) in a daring rescue mission that threatens all their lives.
The Sand Pebbles:
The Sand Pebbles tells the story of China, a slumbering giant that rouses itself to the cries of its people and of the Americans who are caught in its bloody awakening. It's also the story of Frenchy (Richard Attenborough), a crewman on the U.S.S. San Pablo who kidnaps his Chinese bride from the auction block. Most of all, it's the story of Jake Holman (Steve McQueen), a sailor who has given up trying to make peace with anything - including himself. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for McQueen, The Sand Pebbles blends explosive action with stirring drama and romance.
Von Ryan's Express:
As the Allies begin to push the Nazis back toward Germany, U.S. combat pilot Colonel Joseph Ryan (Sinatra) is shot down and placed in a prison camp. Initially, he's more concerned with surviving than escaping. But in time, Ryan takes over from the commanding British officer (Trevor Howard) and masterminds a daredevil race for freedom that involves commandeering a train and getting it across Italy to Switzerland. Then it's all blazing action, hair-raising chases and spectacular Italian scenery in this Oscar -nominated adventure that runs full speed until the nail-biting finale!
The Young Lions:
Academy Award winner Marlon Brando captures the extraordinary contradictions and complexity of a decent man who becomes a Nazi officer. The Young Lions tells the story of World War II from both sides. The American, represented by Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin. And the German, made tragically vivid by Brando. Based on the novel by Irwin Shaw, The Young Lions is a provocative, insightful movie. It is also one of Brando's all-time best.
