Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Wagner star in this gripping re-enactment of the tragic 1912 sinking of the Titanic in which over 1,500 people lost their lives. Supposedly an unsinkable ship, the huge British luxury liner met with disaster on its maiden voyage when its captain ignored numerous warnings of impending danger. Though based on facts culled from eyewitnesses, fictional characters depict the men and women, many of them international celebrities, who courageously faced this unexpected tragedy in the icy, bleak waters of the North Atlantic.
This tremendously moving and extraordinary film continues to captivate audiences around the world.

Titanic
The 1950's other titanic film is the 1953 fox feature, simply titled "Titanic" the film is a rough and loose telling of the famed ships story. At only 90 minutes long brevity is the films greatest strength, never allowing itself to outstay its' welcome. Compared to 1958's A Night To Remember the film is fairly weak and far less accurate, however the special effects are still fairly good and provide a nice look at cutting edge 50's appeal. The disk itself is reasonable, oddly the films menu uses a cutout of the 97 Titanic sinking and it features 2 nice commentary tracks, but lacks the more exhaustive special effects such as the documentary that graced the previous dvd release. The picture quality is mixed, though very clean and with a natural grain look and structure, the print looks to be the same master as the dvd release and isn't overly sharp and lacks the detail that might be expected from a B&W blu ray release, especially compared to ANTR. However, it's clean, reasonably detailed and a step up from the dvd. If you enjoy the film, it's well worth the £10 price tag.
