Davis Lean's spellbinding screen translation effectively captures the spirit of Charles Dickens' literary masterpiece. It tells the story of young Pip (John Mills) who experiences two distinctly different encounters with the escaped convict Abel Magwitch (Finlay Currie) and the eccentric Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt). WoW
Charles Dickens is easily my favorite historical writer. No one can capture the human spirit like him. Great Expectations has always been my favorite of his novels. I first saw this on TV back in the 70s, and when DVDs came out in the early 2000's i snapped this up as soon as it was released, the quality of the DVD matched the broadcasted TV version which to be honest was awful video quality, but this was understandable seen as the movie was made in 1946. But behold it got a blu-ray release, and the restoration work done on this is truly remarkable, its displayed for the first time its its original 1.37:1. The detail that can be seen here is stunning, black & white as it should be seen and not the dull blacks that were seen on TV and DVD. This title now takes pride and place in my blu-ray collection.

Fantastic release
David Lean's classic "Great Expectations" is probably not as famous as "Lawrence of Arabia" or "The Bridge on the River Kwai" but certainly just as good. Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, "The Great Expectations" is a very mystyc, dark tale set in the 19th century. It is to me one of the finest adaptations ever made. Starring Alec Guiness in one of his first roles. The picture quality is outstanding. The gorgeous black&white cinematography by Guy Green looks absolutely incredible in HD. The soundquality is also really good and make the film a very captivating experience. To me this film belongs in every film buff's collection and this release is definitely well worth the money. Only the lack of extras is a bit disappointing. 5*****!
