The Film: Waking up in a mass grave surrounded by dead bodies usually means something worse than a bad hangover after a wild night. Open Grave follows a group of amnesiac survivors of an apparent apocalyptic event as they come to terms with trying to find out who they are, why everyone else is dead and what to do next. The film has a positive rating from users on IMDB.
The film features performances from actors like Sharlto Copley (best known for playing Wikus van der Merwe in the film District 9, Howling Mad Murdock in the A-Team and Agent M Kruger in the Matt Damon science fiction movie Elysium) as well as Joseph Morgan (known for his role in The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off series The Originals).
The Director: Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego is a director from Madrid, Spain. His previous films are The King of the Mountain (El rey de la Montana), a thriller from 2007, and the science fiction horror film Apollo 18. Fred Topel of CraveOnline gave the film a good review, saying that its last 10 minutes are the most exciting of any summer movie ‘without special effects’.
You'll like this if…: You like your Zombie films to be extremely bleak and suspenseful, with washed out colours and be based more in the unravelling of a tightly obfuscated plot than in thrilling shocks and traditional horror.
Why audiences like it: A lot of comments about the film have focussed on the enjoyment gained from watching a film they've heard little about, and how this mirrors the plot development - keeping viewers as lost as the characters. Likewise, the performances of the cast, in particular Sharlto Copley, have been highly praised by film-goers and press alike.
