What is the 3DS?
The rumours had been round for ages, but that didn’t stop everyone’s jaws dropping the moment Nintendo officially unveiled the 3D follow-up to its DS handheld. Especially as it doesn’t require cumbersome 3D glasses to enjoy its startling effects, and even offers 3D picture-taking and movie-watching!
Featuring the traditional dual-screen, the top 3.5-inch gaming display is designed to produced crisp 3D images, while the bottom 3D-less display works as the touch panel. The sleek little machine also promises improved graphics capabilities over previous DS models, as well as incorporating new motion-sensor controls, which Nintendo is confident will lead to "interesting new gaming ideas from developers".
What else can it do?
While the 3D visuals were enough to get fists punching the air in excitement, Nintendo also proudly showed off its new built-in camera with two camera lenses, enabling you to take photographs in 3D! Plus, it also carries the potential of watching 3D films on the machine, with Nintendo demoing trailers from upcoming 3D movies from Disney, Dreamworks and Disney. Better than those silly little screens on backs of airplane seats, eh?
To complete the announcement, Nintendo revealed a tantalising list of third-party publishers currently working on titles for the forthcoming system. This included an exclusive Metal Gear Solid adventure, DJ Hero 3D and high-speed racing game Ridge Racer.

Fantastic System
I have had a 3DS since the launch on 25 March 2011. I feel that it is a great system regardless of whether the new 3D effect works for you or not. To be clear, this is not a revision of the DS/DSi brand, it is a new system which builds upon the features of the previous generation of Nintendo handhelds. The system is noticeably more powerful than the DS consoles before it and has better screens and resolution. The Top screen has 15:9 screen ratio and is capable of creating a 3D effect without the use of glasses. It is important to note that because it is glasses-less technology you have to position your head in a "sweet-spot" to view the effect properly. This 3D screen (like all 3D devices) can cause headaches in some cases after prolonged use but the effect intensity can be adjusted and even turned off. Even with the 3D off, the system is still a huge leap ahead of it's predecessors! The game library is ever expanding and there is a good selection of quality titles already... Comes highly recommended!

Nintendo 3DS Console (Cosmic Black)
The Nintendo 3DS in black, looks very sleek in design. Very easy to use and a great all rounder, The screen is the normal size. The graphics are excellent with out a doubt - The 3D version is very good but can be a bit blurred on the eye at the top. Another great idea from Nintendo we now have three of these in the house. Great for playing interactive games together.

Nintendo 3ds Cosmic Black
Bought this as a gift but just had to try it out first.I must say I was very impressed. The 3d effect was much better than I anticpated and on games like Mario Kart 7 it adds a lot to the gameplay.Just two minor negatives, firstly the limited viewing angle especially in 3d mode and the cosmic black is a magnet for fingerprints and dust.Overall though an excellent hand held console.

Nintendo 3DS
This is a good product, but if it had been made as big as the Nintendo DXL it would have been even better, i did not realize it was a lot smaller. This is why i only gave it 4 stars

Amazing Console!
Although the hardware design of the Nintendo 3DS may seem a little ugly in comparison to the clean, Apple-like design of the Nintendo DS Lite, you can tell a lot of thought went into it. When the 3DS is closed, the top half is tapered outwards along the edges, making it very easy to lift open from any point. Although the top half is very glossy, it's covered in a fingerprint-resistant coating. It still attracts prints, just not as easily. The bottom half, when viewed from the sides, is like a two-layer sandwich and all of the LED lights and switches are located along the half which is slightly recessed (so you can't accidentally move any of the switches). When the 3DS is held normally, the hinge holds the lid in place effectively (at least for now). But if you're lying in bed and holding the console up above you, the hinge isn't strong enough to hold the screen open and it will flop shut unless you've clicked it all the way back into place. This part of the hardware has always been a sore spot for the DS family, and only time will tell if the loose hinge wobble will plague the 3DS too. Overall, the console feels solid, and if it's anything like the DS or Game Boy lineup, the 3DS can probably withstand a little abuse before it breaks.
